For several years there has been a fierce discussion between supporters of reading paper books, and those who prefer tablets and special e-readers. Both sides have very good arguments, but often they do not notice the key problems.
No one can challenge this. The smell of an old or new book is unique and it is difficult to compare it with anything else. It is not an aroma that we would like to enclose in a bottle, which we would spray every day. Instead, it relaxes the reader and allows you to more easily lock yourself in a world of fantasy and fiction.
Fragrance is not the only reason why fans of paper books are participating in this discussion. Books have always been a symbol of intellectuals. Readers always think they are better than others. Receiving information via TV or radio is intended only for simpler minds. With the creation of electronic versions of books, the boundary between this desirable intellectual lifestyle associated with being a reader and "not reading simpletons" is disappearing.
Many people grew up among books. They were their main friends and teachers, passing on the most important information and values – things the education system is failing to provide. Each copy of the book, which belonged to them was almost like a living person telling its own story. For such people, eBooks mean pushing friends and replacing them with robots.
Everyone can agree that paper books have their undeniable charm. However, they are also very heavy. It's not even about hard or light cover, but also about the number of pages. It is much easier to upload dozens or even hundreds of different titles to one reader instead of forcing the spine to carry the load. E-readers are particularly appreciated during the holidays, when instead of five books packed in different luggage, you can simply take one small device.
No one can deny with time owning e-Reader becomes cheaper than buying new paper books. These days you can buy electronic books for couple of dollars, while their paper version remain double or even triple more expensive. Of course savings later come with higher price before. E-reader can cost even more than 100 dollars, while more advanced technologically models range from 200-300 dollars. They basically stop being a replacement for paper books, but a complete new device: tablet.
Just like it usually is with such discussions, no one is right here. Every person has a different lifestyle, needs and preferences, so they are fully allowed to appreciate different ways of enjoying same entertainment. And frankly, it doesn’t matter how you read books, as long as you still try to stimulate your imagination and learning something new through pages of written words.
Just make sure you didn’t choose one of the sides just to belong – there’s no shame in being the only one with a paper book amongst tens of e-readers. It is also fully understandable to go on a trip with luggage filled up with clothes, instead of tomes.
